Iraqi Media Safety Group Appreciates Easing Alzeidi’s Imprisonment

Baghdad, 8 April 2009: IMSG appreciates the verdict of Iraqi Higher Court to ease the imprisonment of Muntdher Al-Zeidi sentence to one year instead of three years.
Al-Zeidi’s lawyer described this verdict as “result of considering noncriminal of Al-Zeide, considering his age and his motive”.
IMSG expresses its deep believe that this verdict wouldn’t reached with the respect of executive power of court independent and not practicing any pressure on it, which led to ease the sentence taken by Central Criminal Court on 12 of last March on throwing Al-Zeidi his shoes on former American president George Bosh.
IMSG calling Iraqi president and premier to consider Al-Zeidi’ case and to ease his sentence to six months. Noteworthy that IMSG, Iraqi Journalists Union and International Federation For Journalists called the higher two Iraqi officials to ease Al-Zeidi’s imprisonment after the court’s judgment.
IMSG at the same time calling Iraqi journalists to stick themselves with international criterions of objectivity, non-alignment, accuracy and justice in the context of supporting national unity and sovereignty.
