Unstable Condition Of Iraqi Journalists Union President After Armed Aggression

 

Baghdad 20 September 2008: Iraqi Journalists Union president health is unstable after an covered underground explosion in the front of the Union headquarters office today morning in Baghdad.
The Journalists leader suffered from injuries in his two hands and face bruises. But his health condition deteriorated after few hours, suffering from hard fracturing in the chest influencing heart and lungs.
According to direct hearings from the doctor supervising his treatment, Allami is in an unstable critical condition and he is in serious need to be transferred to specialized hospital.
Allami and the members of Union council members were in their weekly meeting, when the first left the meeting to the entrance of the Union building when the explosion taking place, glass shattered, but a large window hit Allami on the chest and knocked him on the ground.
Two of the guards, other staff and visiting journalists were suffering minor injuries.
This attack comes after about seven months of the attack on late IJU president Shehab Altimimi in the mid of last February in the same area, and within one week after the killing of Al-Sherqia 4 members of its stuff in Mousel.
Iraqi Media Safety Group conclude that IJU is unable to protect its leadership and members if it stays in the same building and area, its necessary to have another office till the end of these criminal attacks on journalists.
Iraqi Journalists have lost 286 killed journalists, 13 of them are women since April 2003.
These attacks confirmed the desperate need to legalize Journalists Protection Law suggested by Iraqi Journalists Union since more than six months.
