IMSG Condemns Pressure On Alhurra's Correspondent In Aldiywaniya Governorate

Baghdad, 6 April 2008: Unfortunately pressure practices on Iraqi media workers increased, 276 journalists killed until two days, including 14 woman journalists. Further, in many Iraqi Governorates journalists attacked by police and sometimes by soldiers. Journalists in Babylon Governorate insulted by the governor guards during the opening of cultural week, and the problem defused by the wisdom of Prof. Jabber Al-Jabberi Culture ministry's under secretary.
At the end of last month traffic police officer and a group of police and soldiers attacked Haider Al-Menssory the president of IJU branch in Basra. Today the council of Aldiywaniya Governorate exercised the highest pressure on Alhurra Satellite correspondent in the Governorate, accusing him of writing false reports on the basic services in Diywaniya.
IMSG praise highly the professional courage of colleague Maitham Al-Sheibany in covering the real facts in his reports, and consider the attitude of Aldiywaniya Gov.'s council a real threat to the foundations of democracy in this Gov. and Iraq at the same time. The Gov.'s council interference in the work of journalism reporting targeting to prevent discovering facts, inefficiency and corruption in fulfilling the huge projects, which the central government allocate billions of Iraqi dinars ( many millions of dollars) to build.
We believe in IMSG in the general trend announced by Iraqi president, parliament speaker and prime minister, that the objective journalism is a real helping hand to build new Iraq. They consider journalism work in discovering inefficiency and corruption is a real help to Iraqi democratic foundation. According to these high officials' words in Iraq state, we are looking to express themselves in practice, by ordering Iraqi officials not interfering in the journalists work, or practicing illegal pressure on journalists, and to court them if they really harmed national interest, if there is a real damage according to Iraqi law and not to anger inefficient officials.
