Important Conclusions After Basra Battle
Baghdad, 13 April 2008: Iraqi Media workers were in a very sensitive position during the military and political movement to restore law authority and end oil and drugs smuggling gangs, and all kinds of criminal acts, organized or unorganized crimes. Iraqi media workers were to explain their utmost concern to commit to the national and human values and to be at the same time objective and accurate observers in covering Basra battle.
As much as Basra battle was a great challenge for Iraqi state and its executive, legislative and juridical authorities, and all Iraqi society forces, esp. the political powers, but the challenge the media workers have faced was greater, more difficult and complicated. Iraqi Media Net\'s workers in general, and Iraqi TV satellite\'s journalists in especial, were accused by many groups that \" they are pro Mr. Nuri Al-Malki, the prime minister, and they are working for Islamic Supreme Council Of Iraq led by Sayed Abd-Alaziz Al-Hekiem\", this led to the death of the father of the journalist Abas Abod and the destruction of Thamer Al-Shumeri\'s house, another IMN journalist.
Other media foundations accused of supporting Almehdi Army, which led by Sayes Muqtda Al-Sader, for very complicated and secret sectarian causes.
IMSG, according to its deep commitment to the Right of Opinion and Expression, which World democratic forces fought for during many decades, and Iraqi political forces fought for against the last totalitarian regime, considers the balanced media coverage of national events is a grand national duty, expressing the maturation of Iraqi society in embracing media foundations paying all its attention to be balanced and fair in presenting the official opinion and the other ones, without being partial to any one but the general human and national values, in order to prevent more tension and blood, by not being the government platform or the powerful social forces only, but to insist to be a just tool helps officials to be more accurate in their handling the struggle according to justice and prevent more national bloodshed, by their presenting accurate facts and various opinions, as being state media foundations and not government tools within this Iraqi youthful democracy.
IMSG consider the previous events as confirmation on the need to Iraqi parliament to hasten legalization the law of journalists\' protection, which was presented by Iraqi Journalists Union to Iraqi premier office. IMSG at the same time can not miss the responsible treatment of security authorities by releasing Al-Sumaria\'s sport correspondent, who arrested in Al-Mahmudia as soon as his press identity confirmed.
On the other hand, Basra battle had confirmed the need of guaranteeing the safety of media workers, esp. by political, security and defense apparatus, i.e. armed forces and police, to prevent similar attacks as what have happened to Al-Hurra correspondent in Basra.
At last, IMSG believes that the development of Iraqi of media cannot reached without the promotion of media role as national non-partial authority in covering events, paying all attention to uncover whatever threats society safety and any corruption consumes national wealth, calling to reject any kind of fanaticism. This target cannot reached without national support for Iraqi media, the support of all activities to raise professional standards of media workers, through the activities of Iraqi Journalist Union and its legitimate born IMSG, who are supported by International Federation For Journalists, whom its S.G. Mr. Aiden White visited Iraq in the first days of this year, and was promised by the speaker of parliament, vice-president and interior minister to support, morally and financially, our role, IMSG and Iraqi Journalists Union, in all our activities to deepened the awareness of media safety measures, by keeping journalists their independent, objective and fair coverage of news and events.
